In the inter-religious dialogue of "the three amigos," their respective self-criticisms is particularly important because their act of doing so implicitly challenges the typical way religion is understood (see http://deligentia.wordpress.com on this), at least in the modern context. What if the practice were to spread?

Catherine - I so enjoy your blogs - you always give me something to think about. In thinking about the church and our faith in the 21st century you had a sentence about who WE are as Christians, and it was wonderful to have it spelled out like that. I wish I could learn to bravely define myself as that kind of Christian in conversations with people who may have such fixed ideas about what Christian is - some stereotype that I don't fit into at all. I need some lessons in the language of speaking out - with confidence, about what I/we are.

Shortly before we moved away, the youth of First Christian Church of Falls Church presented an entire Sunday service focused on the tragedy of Darfur. It was an easy shot -- the innocent, defenseless Blacks vs. the evil, well-armed Janjawid Arabs, who hadn't a friend for miles around and couldn't hurt us if they wanted to. At the end of the service, they invited us to take specific prayer concerns from a basket for our private prayer time.

Afterward, I asked one of the teens where to find the prayers for the Janjawid. She was shocked. "But they're the enemy!"

"Sure," I replied. "Aren't they the ones who need to have their hearts changed?"

Then it was my turn to feel smug and self-righteous. I guess it's easier to move that stuff around than to make it go away.

Yes, I have been thinking more about that sermon also. But your piece made me think about the fact that all of the best parts of church have a way of following us home. After spending time preparing, rehearsing and singing "Zikr" with the choir last Sunday, I have found the sounds of that Sufi chant swirling around in my head all week, or I find a phrase from the "Shalom" piece singing itself again inside my brain. I think it all counts as prayer.
